If you’re planning a trip to Tulum, check out my complete guide for insider tips on the best places to stay, best food, things to do, and hidden gems that Google won’t show you.
To be safe in Tulum, here's what you need to know:
Like any other popular and touristy destination, crime ranges from petty theft to violent crime at times. While it is definitely not how they portray it to be in the news or netflix series and movies, Tulum is a location where being aware of your surroundings and taking the necessary precautions is necessary.
Once you arrive in Tulum, you’ll notice frequent military and police presence as they are taking many measures to patrol and keep the areas safe for locals and visitors. This is totally normal and part of the way they keep the city controlled.
Safety Tips for a Smooth Stay
- Stay Informed
Research Neighborhoods: Tulum is basically divided into Tulum town and the Beach area. Be cautious to drive outside of the Tulum areas at night as phone signal may be low and roads aren’t completely lit up. Anywhere around Tulum, from the town to the beach area is safe and big streets like the 2 main roads will be well lit.
- Choose Your Accommodation Wisely
I recommend staying in the Aldea Zama area as it is currently the most developed and at a mid-price range compared to Tulum town and the Beach area. For a luxury/resort stay definitely check out the beach area and if you are looking to stay under budget, go for the town stays.
