Explore Local Life
Medellín has a very vibrant local culture, and there is nothing better than to experience by visiting:
Plaza Botero: This square hosts sculptures by the famous artist Fernando Botero, with something always happening.
Pueblito Paisa: Just imagine walking into a mini village of a traditional Colombian town, to get a flavor of their heritage.
Feria de las Flores: In case you are visiting Medellín in August, you have the opportunity to attend this blooming flower festival. This is considered one of the biggest festivals in Medellín and is filled with parades, street music, and colorful stands. I think it’s the perfect excuse to book a trip to Medellin in August.
Fun and Nightlife
For a night to remember in Medellin, these are the places I would recommend:
Provenza: A street filled with music, bars, and dancing clubs to spend all night!
Chiva Rumbera: Ever partied on a bus? Dance and enjoy a tour around Medellin while riding this open window typical bus called a “chiva”.
Shopping and Markets
There is a good mix of chic shopping and lively markets in Medellín:
El Tesoro Shopping Mall:
My personal favorite, a mall where you can find all international and local brands. You even have coworking spots, restaurants, movie theaters, and rides for kids and teens.
Sunday Market: This market provides you with fresh produce, souvenirs, and a feel of the local life found on Sundays on Avenida El Poblado where they also host the “ciclovia” where roads shut down so that locals can run, walk, or take a stroll.
Food and Drink
If there’s one thing Medellin is known for is its delicious food, not only local cuisine but also international! I’ve had some of the best Indian, Italian, and Mexican food in Medellin!
Local specialties: Coming to Medellin automatically means you have a list of local specialities to try! You cannot leave without trying Bandeja paisa, arepas, and empanadas amongst MANY others!
Visit a coffee shop: Medellín is a coffee country, so take some time to try some freshly brewed Colombian coffee. You can find local coffee spots on any corner or go to a cute boutique coffee shop like Pergamino.

Have more time in Medellin and want to explore the hidden gems outside the city?
Guatapé: This lively town is famous for its colorful houses, incredible lake views, and the famous El Peñón de Guatapé rock. I recommend going on a daytrip or spending one night there.
Visit El Retiro: Walk around a traditional Colombian town situated amidst stunning countryside views, enjoy coffee from the rooftop and people watch as the sunsets! You can get here via Uber or by hiring a private car which I recommend inside the Medellin Guide.
For weekend trips outside of Medellin I recommend checking these out: Jardin, Salento, or Armenia.
Festivals and Celebrations
One thing about Medellin is Medellín knows how to throw a party! If you are here during these times, you simply can't miss them:
Flower Festival of Medellín (August): You shouldn't miss this cultural show of artistic displays.
The Medellín International Film Festival, also known as FestMedallo, is an annual event held in Medellín, Colombia. It typically takes place in February and showcases a diverse range of films from around the world, including feature films, short films, documentaries, and animations.
The Medellín International Jazz Festival, also known as MedeJazz, is a renowned annual event held in Medellín, Colombia. Typically taking place in September, this ten-day festival showcases a diverse range of jazz styles, from traditional to contemporary.
Colombiamoda is a major fashion event held annually in Medellín, Colombia. It typically takes place in July and showcases the latest trends in Colombian fashion, as well as international designers.
Safety Tips
Is Medellin safe? Of course this is the biggest question when it comes to visiting Medellin because for many years it was known for its violence and on top of that, all the movies and series continue portraying Medellin as this crime filled district which is definitely not the case.
Just like any other big city, here are the precautions you should take when visiting Medellin:
- Be careful of your belongings as pickpocketers are very slick and will take any opportunity they see to grab a phone or wallet that is easily accessible.
- Use licensed taxis or ride-sharing apps for easy transportation.
- Do not participate in any illegal activities, Medellin is cracking down on tourists that are traveling with bad intentions and will take legal actions, so just don’t do anything you wouldn’t do in your home country.
- Don’t flaunt money or act as if you came to splurge. While for many countries, the exchange rate is very favorable, it’s very important to remember that for locals, it’s not always accessible to indulge in all the luxuries offered. So be empathic.
